A Brand with a Story

According to a story passed down from generation to generation in Ethiopian oral tradition, Kaldi, an Ethiopian goat herder, witnessed an interesting event one day while grazing his goats. After eating the fruits of a tree he had never seen before, the goats became more cheerful and lively, and did not want to sleep at night. After noticing this, Kaldi gathered the fruits from the tree and knocked on the door of the monks in his village to tell them about his discovery. The monks, upon hearing about the effect of the coffee beans on the goats, initially did not believe the story and threw the coffee beans into a wood fire. The coffee beans began to roast instantly, and the unique aroma of coffee spread throughout the area.

The aroma of the coffee inspires Kaldi and the monk, and they begin to prepare a drink from the coffee beans. These roasted beans are ground in a container and boiled in water to extract their essence. It is believed that this is how the first coffee was born. The monks noticed that coffee kept them more alert and awake during their nightly rituals, and thus began coffee’s rapid journey from mouth to mouth, from tongue to tongue.

…Every cup holds a story. Soon, coffee reached Yemen and from there spread to Istanbul in 1401, then to Europe and eventually the entire world. This connection between Ethiopia’s mountains and people around the globe is now the world’s second most valuable liquid after oil. The fact that over 2 billion cups of coffee are consumed daily worldwide is proof that this delicious beverage has become a passion. Coffee, a magical drink that brings people and communities together, is a wise beverage that has enriched civilizations with its influence on the development of world literature and intellectualism.

The year 1401, when coffee was first exported from Yemen to the world, inspired our brand name, while the goat that discovered coffee has been immortalized as the symbol of our brand as a sign of respect. Thankfully, that stubborn goat was curious, thankfully that ship set sail, thankfully the first coffee was brewed, and thankfully humanity was introduced to the magical beverage that is coffee. So now it’s time for a new “thankfully.” With the brand we have established, we envision creating our own “thank goodness” by bringing the unique coffee culture that has spread from our region to the world back to these lands today, reimagined with a new style and interpretation for the future.

Our brand, which took its first step with coffee, has expanded its scope of flavor and experience over time, giving rise to the 1401 FOOD & DRINK brand.

Today, under both the 1401 COFFEE and 1401 FOOD & DRINK brands, we offer a powerful experience that draws inspiration from the roots of coffee culture but is not limited to coffee alone.

Our brand was brought to life through the shared vision of two visionaries: one experienced and skilled in communication, the other young, dynamic, and innovative.

Together, they designed not just a café or restaurant, but a living space that adds value to city life with its style, atmosphere, and attention to detail.

So why 1401?

Because this date marks the turning point when coffee was first exported from Yemen to the world, setting off a journey of cultures and flavors.

According to legend, an Ethiopian goat herder named Kaldi noticed that his goats moved joyfully after eating red berries. The familiar aroma that emerged when monks roasted these berries inspired the first transformation of coffee into a beverage in history.

Coffee spread from Yemen to Istanbul in 1401 and then to the rest of the world.

We have chosen this history as the inspiration for our brand.

Because coffee is not just a beverage, it is a culture, a connection, an experience.
To preserve this culture and bring it into the present, 1401 COFFEE keeps the passion and tradition of coffee alive, while 1401 FOOD & DRINK offers rich flavors with a contemporary twist.

Our brand blends the richness of the past with a modern touch, reinterpreting this culture in every sip and every bite.

Thank goodness that goat was curious.
Thank goodness that first bean was roasted.
And thank goodness we are part of this story.
